Document Camera Will Save Unfunded Film Class!

Help my seniors participate more fully in their own educations! Last year I proposed and created a new Film/Media Analysis class for seniors. I've been concerned for years about the kids I see "slipping through the cracks"--finding little at school to engage them, doing the minimum when choosing and participating in classes, and the worst fate, dropping out of school altogether. I see so many of my students take 2 or 3 classes in their senior year, wasting their newfound intellectual capacity and maturity, and falling into bad off-campus habits like doing drugs and drinking. When my juniors were consistently excited during the Film Unit I did with them in Junior English, I decided to harness this excitement to get kids to continue building their Critical Thinking skills in a Senior Year English class: Film and Media: Reading the Image.

While usually a new class would receive at least some funding, my proposal was denied in full due to staff cuts this year and our district being in some financial trouble. As a result, I am buying films for the class, photocopying excerpts of textbooks I've bought, and I plan to hold a car wash this fall in order to raise funds for a field trip. However, one piece of equipment that I need to really make this class work for students is a document camera. I foresee many times when students will build critical thinking skills most effectively when they participate in their own learning. I will want them to bring in print examples of advertisements they've analyzed, share their storyboard creations with the class and be able to see as a class a diagram or still shot in one of the single film textbooks I've purchased.

A document camera will allow students to bring in examples of visual literacy from their own lives, to share with others, to participate in their own learning and to access visual learning strategies as a class.

Your help will allow me to provide often overlooked and at-risk students to feel important and valued, while radically improving their visual literacy skills and ability to critically analyze the images with which they are barraged each day.
