Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach third grade in a high-poverty area in New York City. My students are amazing sponges that love to learn about the world.

I used to only have up to 20 students every year for my first few classes and our small rug worked fine. The last 2 years, I have had 28 students and not everyone can fit on the carpet. We use the carpet throughout the day and I have to rotate which students get the luxury of the soft, warm carpet. Students that cannot fit feel like they're not part of the discussion group and do not participate as much.

I am asking for a large carpet that will accommodate all of my students so that we can build a community. All students will feel like part of the group and take part in discussions and learning time. Also, more students would be able to relax on the larger rug during our silent reading time. I am choosing a rug that depicts a rain forest scene as we study a yearlong rain forest unit. I thought it would be a great addition to the classroom to brighten it up and be a useful research tool. I am also asking for rain forest bookmarks that students can hold their place in their favorite books while continuing the rain forest connection on the rug.

Your donation will ensure that all of my students have a welcoming permanent spot on the classroom rug. You will also be able to continue our rain forest studies throughout the day, and especially during reading time.
