I am a third grade teacher at a Title 1 school. Over 60% of our student population participated in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program this past year. Additionally, last year our English Language Learner population doubled. We are a high needs school.

Laura Ingalls Wilder's book "Little House in the Big Woods" is an enduring classic that is considered "core literature" in third grade in our district. I inherited a class set from a previous teacher, and I have used these books every year since I have taught third grade. The books have yellowed pages, are old, and are falling apart. It is the sign of a well loved book to look so bad!

This book has survived as a classic because it brings to life the wilderness that was the United States when the pioneers were trying to settle and survive their new country, and it does it through the eyes of a child. The lives of Laura and her family often stand in stark contrast to the lives of my students, but there are still many ways in which all children can relate to one another. This is both a reading comprehension lesson and a history lesson rolled into one. I do not want to lose the opportunity to share this exciting piece of our history and American literature with my students.
