Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fourth grade elementary school teacher who is fortunate to work in a low income community. This unique community is filled with students who are passionate and enthusiastic about reading. The students, parents and myself are persistent advocates for the promotion of literacy in every classroom. My classroom curriculum consists of reading, math, word-study, writing, science, and social studies. My classroom population is usually between eighteen to twenty-five students.

Reading provides a person with the ability to survive in our world. Guided Reading is an intricate extension of my reading lessons. Every strategy that I teach is reinforced by some independent activity. There are many students in my class who require a strategy to be taught in a small group setting. Guided Reading gives me a chance to work exclusively with five or six of my struggling readers. My goal as a teacher is to ensure that my students are all reading on a fourth grade level at the end of the school year. Currently, my classroom does not have a designated desk for guided reading and conferencing. When I conference with my struggling readers, I have to ask other students to relocate to other parts of the classroom. The transition is usually disruptive and time consuming.

A horseshoe shaped table will be the ideal working station for small group instruction. The table is shaped in a unique way, it makes the teacher the focal point of the students' attention. The table can be placed in a secluded part of the classroom, hence enabling me to work with minimal interruptions.

My favorite teacher was Mr. Laura. He would say to the class," Read the world!" He instilled in me the desire to read, read, and read. He told his students to read billboards, read the side of buses, and in my case read romance novels and comic books. I took his advice and became a life long reader of all types of literature. My fondest memories of this remarkable teacher is sitting in a circle taking turns reading many books. In the afternoons, he would take various groups, and he would read to us and we would read to him. The times that we spent in those intimate groups were invaluable. I believe that my desire to read was born in that environment. I feel that it was there that I began to flourish as an ardent reader. I would like my students to have positive memories of reading. I strongly feel that this table will be a functional addition to my classroom.
