"People often jokingly refer to Texas as its own country. I teach first grade in a poor area of a large city in Texas. I want to teach my students the greatness Texas has to offer, as well as its place in the United States and the world.

First grade is a time to learn about your place in the community. Without having a physical means to show the students where they live, it is impossible for them to gain a sense of what the world has to offer. Most of my students probably will never leave Texas. I hope to inspire them to dream of seeing other diverse cultures. By showing them where Texas fits in to the United States and how the United States fits in to the world, I believe they will dream big.

I plan to begin teaching my students how Texas fits in to the United States by having a map of the United States on their story time rug. Each student will be able to choose a state on which to sit. When we have our library class, each week a different student will select a book about a different state in the United States. This will be read on our story time rug.

Once students have mastered their knowledge of how Texas fits in to the United States, I will show them how the United States fits in to the world on a globe. Students will then begin to read stories about children in other countries. In sum, a rug with a map of the United States and a globe will provide the physical means to demonstrate the importance of their local, regional, and global communities.

By providing a U.S. map rug and a globe, you will enable my students to dream beyond Texas.

My students need a globe and rug to enrich their sense of community locally and in the world. The cost of this proposal is $497, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."

Mrs. D. sent this note after the project was fully funded:

Oct 10, 2008
Dear p clarke thomas, Spencer F., peterrauh and Punchbowl Software,
Thank you so much for your generous donation to my project. I have already begun thinking about how I can incorporate the globe into my lessons. The U.S. map rug will also be a welcome addition to the room as we are introducing the concepts of neighborhoods, maps, and country to the students this month. Today, my students had to sit directly on the floor while I read them a book, and I smiled when I thought about how much more comfortable they will be on the rug during our reading period.

My excitement went through the roof when I found out the project had been fully funded. I immediately began to dream about using the two items in my classroom and the excitement my students will have when they walk in and see them for the first time. This will help my students continue to dream big! Again, you have my heartfelt thanks.

On Jan 12, 2009, Mrs. D. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
