I teach math and reading for the 7th grade at a Title 1 school where most student's families live below the poverty line.

A love for reading is virtually nonexistent in most middle grades classrooms. IT'S NOT COOL TO READ IN MIDDLE SCHOOL! My goal is to show students that reading is not only a way to be cool but that they may also stumble upon a topic that interests them if they just take some time to look! My students are mostly low-level Special Education students with a mixture of students who did not pass the state test the previous year. My hope is that we together may inspire them to become better readers by using the Current Event form of the Weekly Reader.

We will need 30 copies of the Current Event Weekly Reader. We will use these "magazines" to give momentum to low leveled readers. Students will discover that they CAN read when it is interesting and this will hopefully inspire them to continue to read on topics that interest them in the near future.

With your help you will give students a key that will unlock so many doors. You will also aid in bringing confidence to low-leveled readers who typically need a gentle push in the right direction. Please know that your donation will be cherished by students and hopefully empower them to find a love for reading.
