Making Math a Must!

My students need math materials, including a meeting the standards math library, a set of games, rubbing plates and rubbing crayons, and number activity mats.

I teach in a public Montessori primary school. My classroom is an Early Childhood classroom that services three, four, five and six year old children in an urban area. Many of my students are English Language Learners.

Because many of my students do not speak English, it is important for them to have hands-on materials to make the mathematical process easily understood. With an increased push in mathematics to learn reasoning skills that apply to all areas of learning and practical life, establishing strong math skills in young children is a high priority in teaching.

I am requesting math manipulatives to help with counting skills, materials that can be used in play activities to increase number understanding, and materials to check and record these skills. The number mats will help children explore number sense in an active way during the movement sessions of our day...a very sneaky, subliminal way for them to work with numbers while having fun! I am also asking for a set of books for my classroom library that are easy to read that reinforce the standards of learning required for Kindergarten students such as patterns and shapes. The "Fun to Count" games will increase my students knowledge of one-to-one correspondence which is an essential concept to learn to create a strong foundation of number sense. The crayon rubbings will allow children to count and rub numbers and number representations. This is an excellent way for children to create a "brain print" of what that number means.
