Our Deepest Fear -- Algebra

My classroom project will need one "Hands on Equations" Class set for 30 students as well as the instructional DVD.

I am a third grade teacher of students in a high-need, at-risk population in Virginia.

I work with many students who have no confidence in themselves as learners, many of whom do not receive the encouragement they need from their families. I am stunned at the number of third grade students who already are self-defeated, especially in the areas of reading and math and who have very little hope in their ability to ever “get it.” I strive everyday to empower my students and help them in developing confidence in their abilities, especially in the area of math.

Because many of my students do not have the advantage of having parents who can be actively involved in their educations because of work obligations or family circumstances, most of my students have very few opportunities to build background knowledge or receive cultural enrichment. Thus, higher level thinking skills and creative problem solving skills do not have an opportunity to develop. The study of the abstract concepts of algebraic thinking helps to encourage this type of thought process. "Hands on Equations" will help these children develop these skills.

The words of the poem by Marianne Williamson, “Our Deepest Fear,” are particularly relevant when I think of my students and my desire to change the way they not only think about themselves as learners, but also in how they think about math. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? . . . There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. . . . We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
