Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My sixth grade special education students live in a high-need community. Their disabilities range from learning, emotional, and speech and language. These kids never stop amazing and do a great job of keeping me on my toes and challenged as an educator.

Every year, one of the ways in which my students amaze and surprise me is through their curiosity in current events. And as every teacher knows, when your students are curious, you use that curiosity to engage and teach them. Due to their disabilities, my students struggle greatly with reading. I searched high and low last year to find readable, kid-friendly current event resources, and the best I found was TIME For Kids. I would borrow an extra copy from a teacher here or there. My students responded so well to the format and content of the magazine, yet we could only scrounge up one or two copies a week.

With an individual weekly issue for each of my students, they can truly indulge their curiosity for the state of our world. TIME For Kids will not only expose these low-income, struggling readers to world events, but the high interest topics covered will undoubtedly improve their reading fluency, comprehension and empower them with information.

Your help will give my students an opportunity to understand the world, and their relationship with it. TIME For Kids in this special education sixth grade classroom will truly impact not only their ability to read and understand the news, but will increase their reading confidence and foster a desire to pick up a newspaper or magazine and be a part of our increasingly global society.
