Travelin' Tales

My students need 15 high interest books such as "The Neverending Story" by Michael Ende that allow for different backgrounds and reading levels to read at home with their family members.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Dare . . . to make your mark! That is our theme this year, inspired by the simple children's book, The Dot. Even though I teach 6th graders, I begin each school year with a picture book that creates a powerful message of inspiration and achievement through literature. I love books and my goal is to share that with my students. Not just to teach how to read but to love to read and to enjoy reading! My 6th grade classroom is the world - many culture, many incomes, but most importantly, many individuals.

About 50% of my students come from a highly mobile area, made up of mostly working class minority families, struggling to make ends meet. The majority of these families greatly value education but don't always have the time or resources to provide the "extras" for their children, like books or a trip to the library. These often are the same families who have limited contact with the school, possibly feeling overwhelmed or intimidated by the school environment.

So, Travelin' Tales needs to move from an idea to reality! This year I am beginning this as a home read aloud program with my parents. It will include both at school sessions, web links, take home information, but most importantly, a community outreach program to our most mobile and at risk population. Travelin' Tales will include a library, partially funded by your generous donations (the rest coming from my own library for now) that will go to homes by appointment. I hope to choose some of my students who also have younger siblings. Together, we (students and families) will begin learning about great read alouds and sharing books. I hope to demonstrate some basic read aloud and story telling techniques with parents. Students will then choose a book(s) with their families that they'd like to read together. We'll make an appointment in about 2 weeks for me to return and see how things are going. Of course, I hope students will begin to check out books to share from school. My goal is to build relationships with families and begin to encourage them to feel welcome at future reading events I have planned at school.

Your donations to Travelin' Tales library will allow the students to have a much greater selection and allow me to reach more families. All students should have access to great stories, no matter what their circumstances! Jim Trelease, author of the Read Aloud handbook says, "What you make a child desire is more important than what you make them learn. Desire is planted by teachers and parents." Dare ... to make your mark!
