Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our small, rural public high school is bordered by fields and orchards on two sides, fair grounds on another, and is a block down from the two lane interstate highway. As an English teacher, grades 10 and 11, I often supplement the literature I teach with nonfiction materials and primary sources.

Last year, I introduced the memoir, "Night", into my sophomore honors curriculum. The students were captivated by Wiesel's story. Because California is so standards driven, students don't get the opportunity to study the holocaust in depth in their world or U.S. history classes. We spent some time in the computer lab, searching the internet, but sharing a small lab with other classes does not make for optimum learning.

This school year, all sophomores will be required to read "Night" in their English class. But because our students have access to so little information about the holocaust, I want to supplement the meager collection of our school library in order for students to learn and understand just what Hitler meant by "the final solution."

Your donation will enable not only my 190 sophomores, but our entire student body of 650 students access to much needed materials detailing an event in history that must not be forgotten.
