My students need 25+ high interest books on different levels, covering topics such as Ancient Egypt, drawing and Ripley's Believe It Or Not, along with drawing paper.

I teach at a north Bronx Middle School in the Bronx, New York. I teach a sixth grade special education class and seventh grade special education class in a small community school in a high-need community. My school is a new school and is therefor still struggling to build up a strong foundation of materials including classroom libraries. This year my school expanded from a sixth grade and seventh grade to a sixth, seventh and eighth grade. In my classroom library I have many great titles, some of which are supplemental titles that I received through a grant last year. Many of the great titles, however, are written on the sixth and seventh grade level. Though I teach sixth grade and seventh grade, many of my students are reading far below reading level. Despite their difficulty with reading, many of my students love to read, however, the books that we have in our classroom are too difficult for them or they are books that they saw in my classroom last year and have already read. They therefore get easily frustrated, discouraged and bored when they are reading. Older students who struggle in reading are often faced with the disheartening reality that most books they are able to read and understand are written for less mature interests and intellect. For this reason, I thoroughly searched for high interest books for my students. I have found many graphic novels and high interest, low level books and books that pertain to issues that they face in their own lives such as the Captain Underpants graphic novels and book by Jacqueline Woodson that I would love to have in my library, however, my school does not have the means to supplement our existing classroom library. Your help will ensure that my students not only have books they are able to read in our library, it will also help to empower them by giving them the tools with which to boost their confidence and therefor maximize their effectiveness as positive community members.
