I am a 7th grade English Language Arts teacher in a middle school where, in 2006, 97% of students were eligible for free lunch, and 64% of students failed the nationally standardized ELA exam. Seventh grade is important because it encompasses the time period in which students face major changes in emotional and physical development, challenging the establishment and maintenance of positive learning habits in the years to come. I require my students to read for forty minutes daily, and to write for twenty minutes daily. I have requested that their responses to literature go in one composition notebook and that their daily writing about their lives beyond books go in a different notebook. To ensure that pages are not lost and that these precious learning processes are monitored to encourage progress, these writings need to be kept in composition notebooks, from which no pages can be easily lost. Most of my students do not have the means to purchase these notebooks. It is vital that we launch these reader's and writer's notebooks immediately, so that their growth can span the length of the year. My request is that you donate money to provide each child in our classroom with two composition notebooks and two folders to store drafts and assignment rubrics. All students deserve safe places where they are encouraged to think about and reflect on the books they read and the lives they lead. But these students in particular, with their socioeconomic disadvantage and current status as failing readers, need these notebooks and folders to support their becoming the readers they are capable of becoming. Please help my students by providing these basic supplies, so that they will be organized and supported in their reading and writing endeavors, allowing them to become better readers, and to believe in their potential to become cream-of-the-crop readers and writers.
