My students need a listening center and read along books.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 5th grade bilingual teacher. The school community in which I teach has great need. Almost all of my students live in a huge apartment complex right across the street. Not to mention, they are not living in the best of conditions. Nevertheless, they come to school excited and eager to learn.

I grew up in this community and know how hard it is to live here. I had the fortune of having caring parents who tried to keep me as far away from danger as possible. Unfortunately, these students are faced with some very hard decisions that children should not have to experience. I truly believe that without being able to read fluently, you can't get far in life. They need basic reading skills and also need to know that there are many beautiful things out there.

Some of my students struggle to read sight words such as the, and, who, how, etc. How can they continue on to middle school without having the experiences necessary to read fluently? These already struggling readers will be tested in English for the first time at the 5th grade level and need help to at least be able to recognize the words. Research has shown that when students use recorded books there is a great gain in comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and most importantly motivation. This listening center will motivate my students to read books that they would otherwise not be able to read while being exposed to the English language. It will help me record any books that interest them and allow them to read it at their own pace during silent reading time.

You will make it possible for my students to read sight words and be exposed to other vocabulary. You will also help them discover worlds they never imagined and feel confident about reading in the English language. Please help me help my community and show these students that books can take them to places they never imagined.
