Literature Alive! Student - Created Video Interpretations

My students need 3 mini camcorders that can easily transmit video and sound to computers for editing. They will use these to create an interpretation of a book they choose in a soap opera format.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work in an extremely high needs middle school, teaching reading and writing to 7th graders, many of whom are special needs or English language learners. We are a new school and a small school, and while we are full of vigor and excitement about our students and their potential, our pocketbook often falls short of our vision.

Getting my students excited about books and reading is an uphill battle. They see books as boring and lame, whereas TV, iPods, and video are cool and worthwhile. However, when it comes to high tech options, my school lacks resources to fund the items I need to really hook my students on to reading and learning.

With these three camcorders, I intend to allow students to work in small groups to: (1) read a novel as a group; (2) interpret a scene or scenes from the novel into a soap opera, perhaps changing the venue or time of the story to suit their creative vision; (3) create a soap opera that is written, directed, and acted by the students; (4) tape the soap opera and edit it using computer software; and (5) share their final products with their classmates, families, and teachers. This project is designed to give students practice interpreting literature, applying knowledge of literature and its connection to the world around them, working in groups, and working with technology. It will also give them a chance to showcase their work in a non-traditional format for the school and community at large. I envision my students being excited and proud of their final products, and keeping copies of their soap operas for years to come.

You will make it possible for my students to approach literature and reading and interpretation from a new angle, one that resonates with the world they are surrounded with outside of school - a digital angle. You will also allow my students to exercise their creativity and writing and group work skills. No project like this has ever been done at my school, and I know it will set a fire to my readers' interest in literature!
