Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I knew an old owl that swallowed a ______; I don't know why it swallowed a ______. Many students do not know what owls eat or why. My class of 23 second graders will when given the opportunity to dissect owl pellets. Over 90% of the students at my school come from low-income households. The demographics include 40% Hispanic, 38% African American, 15% Caucasian, and 7% other.

Motivation to achieve in education is generally based on the assumption that there is a “value” of education. Most people living in poverty never have had a meaningful relationship with someone who has benefited from the educational system. As a teacher who knows this, I must plan activities that will engage all of my students. Teaching children about owl pellets can turn into a long lasting memory for years to come. Think of how exciting it will be for them as they dig through the hairball to uncover bones, feathers, and teeth of many different shapes and sizes. Using these undissected treasures, my students will be able to determine who ate what!

I need 1 classroom set, which includes 30 individually wrapped owl pellets, a teacher's guide and a video explaining the life and food chain of owls. Dissecting owl pellets is a fun and engaging activity that provides information about owl adaptations and habits. Owl pellets provide a clue to owls' diet and role in their ecosystem. Students will be able to explain the needs of owls including: air, water, food, shelter and space. Students will also be able to explain the basic anatomy of an owl's digestive system by examining and dissecting owl pellets.

My goal, as a teacher, is to share my passion with them in the hopes that they will, if only in a small way, incorporate a love of learning into who they are and who they will become. Your donation will make it possible for my students to discover their own love of learning.
