Ms. R. Mission Elementary School
Antioch, CA Grades 3-5

Explore the area around our Title 1 low-income school and you will discover that students live in a working class and immigrant neighborhood. Seventy-six percent of students receive free and reduced lunch and breakfast is free to all. A great percentage of our students are learning English as a second language, some are gifted, my 4th/5th SDC students have special needs, and all of them love to learn about the world. Reading and learning is an outlet for these kids who are surrounded by poverty and gang activity.

My students look to their teacher and teacher assistant for the answers. Part of the Content Standards for fourth and fifth grade requires that they learn how to use different sources of information to answer their questions. This learning includes using an encyclopedia. In our classroom, we have some dictionaries, (I’ve had to borrow from other classrooms thesauruses), and no computer for doing research. Guess what? We don't even have a set of encyclopedias in our classroom.

We need the 2007 Encyclopedia Britannica for Students in our classroom for reliable information. Using encyclopedias to answer questions is fast becoming a lost skill. Twice a week, for 45 minutes, my students learn how to use the Internet to answer questions in our computer lab, but they don't have the skills to locate information in a book. Please help to fix that! We need to give these kids a set of encyclopedias.

During the year, my students conduct several research projects during the year. We could really use this additional resource to supplement their learning--in language arts, science, music, social studies, art--even in math. I would also like to set up "exploration" activities to have students browse for their own topics. Education can be fun as well as rewarding especially if students are provided the necessary tools to maximize their learning experience. So, please give my special needs students a chance to explore their own possibilities! My students and I thank you so much.
