Children learn best when they are comfortable. Each year I try to make my classroom look like an inviting place to learn. As a first grade teacher, I realize I need to make my classroom visually appealing to interest my students. Many children in my school live in utter chaos and live in horrible poverty where the breakfast and lunch they receive at school are the only meals they get that day. I try to bring a sense of calm and community into their lives each day by being a constant, safe, loving presence in their lives.

Last year I wrote a grant for a Promethean Activ Board. I was thrilled to come back to school after summer break and see my new board already installed and ready for use! I got busy and rearranged my classroom to accommodate the new technology. I stepped back to look at the new classroom arrangement and couldn't figure out what was missing. Then it hit me...I needed a meeting place where the students could all gather. A place where they could sit, be comfortable, and learn. I needed a rug. I started to look at department stores and in catalogs and realized that it would take double the supply money that I receive to get a nice rug for the classroom. I couldn't justify spending all of the money on a rug when my students don't even have crayons, scissors, and glue to use.

By having a special "learning rug" in the classroom, my children will have a special place to gather as a community of learners. This rug will also create a sense of community in my classroom, as we will meet on it everyday for many subject areas.
