My students need 250 pins celebrating their fine character, artistic merit, citizenship, and attendance, ribbons, message pencils, a button making machine with 1500 inserts and 375 keychains.

Attitude is everything! I am an elementary school teacher who provides academic intervention services to students in grades K-5. The majority of students in my school are from low-income families. Over 92% of the students live below the poverty line. I believe that my school is an oasis in an urban community. My Principal's goal is to educated the "whole child." Academic performance is of course extremely important. However, children are exposed to the arts and to character education.

One problem that I have noticed is that many of the children are defensive, argumentative, and lack basic social skills. Last year we formed a Discipline Committee in order to address these issues. We hold monthly school assemblies and reward students with certificates and other prizes in order to motivate them. We celebrate 100% attendance, wearing of our school uniform, acts of kindness, and volunteerism. As a result, the students are developing and becoming empathetic, considerate, and respectful. I believe this is directly related to the positive reinforcement that we are providing to them.

The resources I will need for the project are award pins, certificates, and a button making machine. The pins and awards will be distributed over the course of the 2008-2009 school year during our monthly Discipline Committee Assemblies. Students will design slogans and make buttons with the button making machine to be distributed at the monthly assemblies. Button-making is a skill that students can use for years to come. Students will be publicly acknowledged for being good citizens.

Character education can positively effect the social development of our students. With your support, students can be motivated to continue to do their best.
