Creating a Hero's Journey

My students need 24 Copies of Joseph Campbell's The Hero with A Thousand Faces to complete the writing of a book that will be published this May. We are using the structure of the hero's journey as the basis for our work.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Literature and writing to students in a high-needs school in California. This class in particular is a culminating senior elective as part of a Humanities Academy in which 95% of the students receive federal lunch subsidies.

I have been granted an amazing opportunity to produce and publish a book written by students on the theme of the Hero's Journey and themes related to Transcendentalism.

Unfortunately we don't have the books; as it is not part of our standard curriculum. This book will provide them with an individual copy that will allow for much greater study.

As their teacher I am coming to see that everyone of the students who signed up to be a part of this book/class are doing so because s/he believes, consciously or not, s/he will have a meaningful and transformative experience by participating in this project. The energy, focus and presence of mind from my students are the best I have ever felt from a class.
