Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second-grade teacher at a shortage school in Brooklyn. Approximately 98% of our students receive free lunch. The majority of the students in our school test at below grade level.
Each year my students come to school ready to learn and prepared for class. They have their book bags, notebooks, paper, and pencils. As the year wears on and on they run out of these items and usually end up without pencils, erasers, and paper. I would like help in supplying these items for my students. My students and their families are very low income and need help in buying school supplies. At the beginning of the year they usually come prepared and have these things, but as the months pass these items are consumed and students' families are unable to purchase more. Any help with school supplies is appreciated so that students can participate in class.
It gets to be such an expense for teachers because I am constantly buying pencils. Our school usually gives us a small box of pencils with about 40 for the year. Some years we get no pencils at all.
I would like to have pencils to give to my students all year. So much class time wouldn't be wasted by looking for pencils, borrowing pencils, or sharpening inferior pencils that break easily. Pencils are a simple request but a vital one for a functioning classroom. I would also like to be able to have a heavy duty electric sharpener. These may seem like a small request but are so necessary in the classroom. Please help my students to have the basic necessities.
