I have been helping parents educate their children for 26 years. I’m currently part of a wonderful team of 5 fourth grade teachers at a fabulous elementary school where 52% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. We believe learning should be fun and are continually searching for innovative ways to present our state-mandated curriculum. My team has developed a week-long writing camp called W.O.O.T. Camp which stands for Writers of Outstanding Talent. It’s fashioned after summer camp. All chairs and desks are pushed back against the walls in every 4th grade room so students can make their “bunks” on the floor where they write. After meeting in the lunchroom to start the day with songs, student-developed skits, and whole group instruction, students travel to “lodges” in the mornings and “cabins” in the afternoon where they receive small group lessons, writing practice, and grammar games. We are in need of clip boards for all our 4th graders. On the first day of camp, each student receives a clip board where notebook paper and other instructional notes are saved during the week. The boards are theirs to keep and use during the school year. W.O.O.T. Camp has become a tradition at our school. Younger students eagerly look forward to their 4th grade year and the older students have fond memories and maybe even a secret desire to return to 4th grade for a week. Your donation will help provide much needed clip boards for each W.O.O.T. Camp participant.
