Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My classroom is a No Bully Zone! I teach 7th and 8th grade students at a middle school in Illinois. Many of my students come from low-income families. I enjoy teaching this age group and in this community because every day I learn something new from my students. They inspire me to be a better teacher.

I have always told my students that my classroom is a safe place. Throughout the years I have earned the trust of many students. Numerous students have come to me for help with difficult situations - including bullying. I have always done my best to prevent bullying in my school, especially in my own classroom. In spite of my best efforts, bullying does continue to take place among this age group. I believe that with the proper tools, I can reach more students and do more to prevent bullying behaviors.

I would like to use 40 copies of Jodee Blanco's "Please Stop Laughing at Me" in my reading class this year and in the future. In this true story, the author tells about her own experience of being bullied throughout much of her childhood. She discusses how the emotional and physical abuse she suffered from her peers affected her and how she overcame it. From past experience, I know that my students enjoy reading non-fiction stories about topics they can relate to. Unfortunately, bullying is a very real topic which many students this age can relate to. I believe that if I can use this book as a part of my reading class, I can help students understand how damaging bullying can be. I believe that this can help change some of the negative behaviors that children this age deal with today. I also plan on sharing these books with other teachers in my school so they can use it in their reading classes as well. Because this will be a high-interest book for my students, I will be able to plan lessons which will help improve their literacy and writing skills.

Your generous donation will help my students learn about the damaging and long-lasting effects bullying can have. It will help my students to understand that bullying is unacceptable. It will hopefully help students who have been bullies change their negative behavior. It will also help students who have been bullied to see that they are not alone and that they can be strong. I know my students will enjoy reading this book. I believe that this book will help some of my reluctant readers gain a new interest in independent reading.
