We're Going On A Dig! Rock Hounds In Action - Geology

My students need class sets of digging tools, work gloves and bug spray to experience a geological dig in our valley.

Thank you for your support! We appreciate any help you can give us for our geological dig project. The students at our northern NH middle school have excellent outdoor places with which to conduct a rock specimen dig. This sort of trip has not happened in recent memory and it's a shame to teach something like the rock cycle without getting out and actually experiencing it. This is my first year teaching earth science, coming from many years as a seventh grade biology teacher. I'm certain that this activity will be remembered by my students and I'm hoping to provide the resources to make these exceptional days in the fall and spring.

I visited our local Fish and Game office and was excited to see a fabulous rock collection proudly displayed in a large enclosure. The specimens were found locally and when I asked how difficult the task of collecting them had been, I was glad to know that some of the most interesting were found with minimal effort and time. This was the perfect opportunity for a relevant, real-life experience in the woods or on our communities' mountains! I believe that if you have to teach the rock cycle and the powers that have transformed this planet, you must include experiential education and not be limited to stock photos in antiquated textbooks. It would be a waste to not incorporate our geological area into our classrooms, given the area in which we live. I'm not a true rock hound, but have a moderate collection from my travels throughout the years. I learned of a local rock club and will meet with them later this month to ask for help in cataloging an enormous set of specimens left in my room. These rocks have not been used for years and years as many of the ID tags have fallen off and no one has had the experience to teach the unit.

This project is an inexpensive local opportunity that utilizes our own best resources. It involves minimal tools and safety equipment, some of which we have already. We will need heavy-duty safety gloves, bug spray and trowels to round out our supply list.

Your donation will help contribute to my ability to provide for experiential, hands-on, inquiry-based learning. I canvassed my peers at school to find out who had provided the rock collection and if he/she might be available to come out of retirement for a day or more to speak or help guest teach this unit. One of my colleagues mentioned that she had graduated from our school and had been in the same science course and utilized the rock labs herself. She mentioned that she remembered testing the hardness and discerning the luster, etc. of the specimens and that this was one of the experiences she remembered most about middle school. This is the sort of outcome that I am hoping for with our geological dig. This activity may even create a few rock hounds! Your generosity will help us learn in a safe manner. The tools will be utilized by many students for years to come. Thank you for your support!
