Future Scientists Seek Hands-On Experiences

My students need hands-on science and social studies materials, including a seed kit, with peat pots and a spray bottle, globes, a solar system floor puzzle, games and sequencing cards.

If you were to walk into my classroom, I would like to show you the wonderful science textbook that we use. It is a great tool, however, many students do not understand what the textbook is explaining without some prior knowledge or hands on experiences. I was lucky that my mom took me to museums and explored the wonderful world around us. We would talk while working on our garden or she would point out a beautiful butterfly that had been the caterpillar we saw in the yard. I didn't realize that my mom was preparing my brain for future learning. At the time, it was just fun talking and working on a project together. My students need that too! It may not be from their mom, but we can do it together.

I have collected a few learning activities at garage sales and stores but I am missing some essential science and social studies concepts. I would like to provide my students with multi-sensory experiences to hook on new information. For example, when we are discovering the parts of the plant, I would like them to grow their own. When we are learning about the solar system, I would like them to be able to put together a puzzle on the floor. These experiences build knowledge through discussion and teachable moments. This background knowledge is essential to hooking on new information. Research tell us that kids need to be primed before they learn new information. Tapping into prior knowledge is the key to that. It also starts tapping into their interests and naturally they become curious about the world around them. This is definitely a moment that makes me feel successful as a teacher.

I know my students need hands on experiences that will make a difference in their ability to connect and remember new information. Having these opportunities will teach concepts, tap into prior knowledge and prime them for learning new concepts.

I know this proposal will help students for many years. It is one thing to read about life cycles, however, when students can manipulate them through the cycle it is much more memorable. With your help we can provide opportunities that will enable my students to explore and learn about the world around them. Thank you for giving these opportunities to my students.
