Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an Honors and AP Chemistry teacher at a high-needs urban school in Illinois. My students are predominantly 11th and 12th graders.

Students know that they are getting an education below the standard of schools in areas with more resources. I am determined to give them a qualitry science education and experience by doing demonstrations often, allowing them to engage in hands-on labs frequently, and most importantly, exposing them to a rigorous curriculum. The lack of technology in my classroom is the most obvious problem.

Without technology, students must manually collect data and then graph information by hand. This can be a tedious process once students have grasped graphing methodology. Thus, allowing students to gather data electronically and allowing the techonology to graph it becomes an essential part of an advanced chemistry class. My school already has 7 LabPro interfaces, and the eight that I have requested here would complete a class set for our school. In addition, the Go-Link adaptor would enable me to demonstrate the technology during labs that the class and I could do together.

Active measurement of data in real time is a powerful tool. Students are accustomed to using technology in their own lives. The ability to integrate it into our chemistry class would engage students and speed their learning.
