Whiteboards in the classroom make learning fun, as well as interactive. I teach the third grade in New York City. My school is located in a neighborhood of low income families. My students are from many different backgrounds, including students from Bangladesh, and several countries in Africa, and the Caribbean.

Presently, we are not allowed to use the blackboard in our school because many children suffer with asthma, and the chalk dust can often cause children with this condition to get sick. Therefore, we have been using whiteboards instead. However, the whiteboards we have are small, and portable. Their size often inhibits instruction. Sometimes they also may keep students from participating in the lesson because the writing area on the whiteboard may be too small for a student's handwriting.

The whiteboard that I am requesting can replace the blackboard, and serve as a stationary place for instruction. Students will also be encouraged to participate in lessons by writing their responses on the whiteboard, without being concerned about the size of their writing. The whiteboard also serves as a chalk-free writing center that does not affect students with asthma.

You generous donation will make it possible for my students to feel more confident about participating in lessons involving writing on the board. The whiteboard will also make our classroom a lot more attractive and bright because of its white color. The fact that the large whiteboard will be in one central place in my room also affords me the ability to keep my students focused on the lesson being taught on a larger surface.
