Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach English to the senior class of a high-need community in New York. Growing up in one of the poorest regions in all of the United States, my students often face the unique challenge of whether or not to even stay in school despite being bright and talented. This year, our school has created an honors English class for our high-achieving students and my goal is to challenge them with relevant issues through engaging and complex texts that grapple with questions of identity.

My students will be facing the most challenging year of their academic life as seniors. They will be making decisions all year about what colleges to attend, and what future they hope to begin building. In dealing with these issues, questions about who they are and where they come from will inevitably emerge.

I believe that as a senior English teacher, I have the pleasure and honor of preparing my students for life after high school. Last year, I watched many of my students struggle to find a fit between who they were and where they were going. By tackling these topics in texts that put a microscope to questions of identity and struggles we all have with our sense of self in the world, I hope to alleviate some of their fears and inspire an excitement about who they can become.

With your help, my students will have the opportunity to explore contemporary novels that will keep them engaged as readers and foster the philosophical and ageless questions about who we are in a post-modern, post 9/11 world. I want my students to see that their struggles are not new but that, in fact, we all face these questions of identity no matter who we are, where we come from, or what time we live in.
