I am a very dedicated teacher and mother who wants nothing more than to have a bright and colorful classroom environment for my students. I am a regular classroom teacher and this is my second year of teaching. This is also my second year of teaching second grade. I teach in a small mountain community in North Carolina. The students at our school are high need and love to learn.

As a mother of 3 and a new teacher, I have had many financial obstacles. One of my own children has had to have multiple brain surgeries to remove parts of his brain and struggles daily. I have spent at least $5000 dollars trying to buy additional classroom tools to assist my students in learning to the best of their ability. I want nothing more than to provide a colorful and meaningful learning environment for my students. Due to the health of my son, I have had to put a hold on purchases for my classroom. The school has purchased a lot of valuable materials for us, but as you know there is only so much money for the school to use. I was able to buy a lot of materials for the students to use with the school money but with 5 second grade classes in a small community the money had to go a long way. I have a rug in my room, but it is not in good shape. It is old, stained and is not large enough to fit all of my students on the rug. Both the students and myself love to have class sessions on the rug and to have daily read alouds at the end of the day.

All I need to make my classroom environment better is a colorful rug. Research shows that a colorful classroom keeps students more energized. The rug would be used multiple times each day and would be greatly appreciated by our students.
