Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a school that serves both middle- and high-school students in the South Bronx. The school serves students that come from highly impoverished backgrounds. Most of my students are far below grade level in reading, and several students are special-education and/or English-language learners. Many of my students have finally started reading, and they are hungry for books that deal with issues that they can connect to and talk about. I am trying to teach them the importance of forming ideas about books and talking about these ideas. To keep this going, we need books to start book clubs! My students need multiple copies of books that will provoke discussion. The books that I am requesting will help them improve as readers and give them an opportunity to address issues that are important in their community, such as gang violence, gender issues, and growing up in an urban environment. I have chosen books that will lead the students to ask questions and find answers through their book-club discussions. Many of the books focus on issues that I feel students need a safe place and opportunity to explore. Please help my students start some book clubs that will both encourage them to be better readers and help them gain new perspectives on the world. Many of my students rarely even leave the Bronx, except through the worlds that reading provides.
