Literacy for the Treetops

My students need 30 copies of the book Wild Trees, by Richard Preston.

I teach at a science focus school in a high poverty neighborhood. My ecology class (grades 10-12) have been doing habitat studies of the Flying Squirrel for the past three years. We help with live trapping these animals to gather data regarding their habitats, ages, reproduction rates and share our findings with agency scientists from the US Forest Service and BLM. Many at risk students who are in danger of not completing high school are very involved in this project. Their attendance improves, they want to become experts, because they are doing real work with real scientist mentors. Last year I was able to buy 8 copies of the book Wild Trees, by Richard Preston. We shared it, and for the first time in my teaching career, students fought over a book!

This book is about several twenty somethings who are disengaged with life in the same way my students are. They begin to climb big Redwoods, and become interested in the Ecology of these massive ecosystems. Along the way, the reader is exposed to LOTS of botany, political science and sociology, as well as with 6-7 real characters, who go on to become famous scientists. My students were able to look up and read articles written by the characters in the book, who they felt they knew personally after reading the book. This year we have the opportunity to actually climb some big trees with a tree-climbing school and some researchers. If each kid had read this book, the climbing would be so much more meaningful.

My students need 30 copies of Wild Trees, by Richard Preston. Each kid will have his own copy to take home at night...no more fist fights over who gets the book over night.

I have been extremely lucky enough to be able to provide my students with amazing field experiences around the Flying Squirrel Project...however, I can't seem to find funding for fiction/biographies for my science class. This book makes the work we do real...It introduces social outcasts who become famous scientists, and this makes the same possible for these students.
