FLIP for Biology

This digital immigrant needs tools to engage my digital natives! I teach biology and AP biology to 10th, 11th and 12th graders at a semi-rural high school with a diverse student body in North Carolina. Half of my school day is spent with college bound juniors and seniors, while the other half is spent with at-risk students I am trying to engage in science and school.

My students are engaged by technology and creating their own products. Plus- they love the movies! I would like to combine these "hooks" and interests by incorporating FLIP camcorders into my teaching. I want to provide students with the opportunity to create and edit videos on various biology topics. In the past, my students have developed videos on the parts of the cell through a project entitled, "Sell an Organelle." I record their "commercials," and they enjoy watching them for review. The problem is that the camcorders are in short supply in my school, and they are not compatible with our computers due to their age. On several occasions, I have "recorded" the commercials only to find that the video isn't transferable to a format that can easily be saved or manipulated.

In order to effectively incorporate video technology into my lessons, I need easy to use camcorders. The FLIP camcorders fit the bill! They are small, record 60 minutes of digital video, and come with a USB port to hook directly to my computer where students can edit their videos. I am committed to providing my digital native students opportunities to use technology in their learning in order to prepare them for the changing workforce they will be entering. With iMovie software, students will be able to create all types of products which they can share through on-line video sources such as Teachertube.

You will make it possible for my students to create! I have purchased time lapse software, and the FLIP also has the capability to take still images. In other words, the sky is the limit. Students will be able to express themselves while making biology meaningful and relevant. Plus, they will have products they can share and show off!
