Charlotte, NC Grades 3-5

How does one begin to teach a student who has never left the confines of his/her urban neighborhood about the enormity of the world? The students who attend my school have very little experience outside of their homes and neighborhoods. Most have never traveled farther than the downtown area in which they live. With 75% of students on free/reduced lunch, there are many challenges to overcome while educating these children. The fourth graders at our school would love to have the opportunity to learn about the world through this magazine subscription.

I have read stories written by the fourth grade students in which they are to describe their best trip ever. Instead of reading about exciting family vacations to the beach, New York City, or the mountains of North Carolina, I am awakened to the lack of life experiences these children have had. Many of these students can't imagine what it is like to travel outside city limits, let alone a far-away place like Beijing. These students need to understand just how big the world is and to grasp what life possibilities may await them.

I believe that a set of Time for Kids magazines can begin to open the minds of these students to a world larger than they can imagine. By reading articles about what is going on in China, Africa, or even just Washington, D.C., these children will begin to realize the endless opportunities that exist to learn, serve, and make a difference in our world. In addition to enlarging the students' view of the world, these subscriptions will assist the students in their fight to read and understand text. Children will read challenging non-fiction articles, discuss the big ideas with their peers, and write intelligent responses to what they have just read. The uses of this magazine abound, as it can be integrated into language arts, social studies, writing, math and science! With each student receiving his/her own individual magazine, it will also foster a sense of responsibility and autonomy that these students rarely experience.

The amazing thing is that with something as simple as a magazine subscription, you can change the life of a child. Imagine a student reads an article about scientists working to cure cancer and is inspired to pursue that as a career goal. Or another who reads about humanitarian efforts in Africa and dedicates his/her life to that end? There is no telling just how much of an impact this Time for Kids subscription may have. Please consider participating in this goal to change the lives of these deserving students.
