The Best Science Book Ever Written

My students need 25 copies of "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson.

Ms. A.
Grades 9-12

With all their modern technology distractions, high school kids rarely take the time to read important books. My students, mostly 10th and 11 graders in Environmental Science, need a well-written, gripping, fascinating, chapter book about important environmental issues that will impact their personal lives. Silent Spring is that book!

Silent Spring by Rachel Carson has been repeatedly named one of the most important science books ever written. It is divided into short chapters on specific topics. It mixes technical language with everyday straightforward explanations. The writing is compelling: visual, descriptive, anecdotal. I have one personal copy of the book and I have occasionally read to the students from it. They repeatedly ask for more, ask for their own copies, and ask why more people don't know about this. I would like to give the students the experience of this book.

I need just enough books for a class set. Twenty-five will do. Occasionally I have more than 25 in my class, but the kids can share. We will read the books in class; I will keep the books safe at school so there is no chance for loss or damage, and the books will continue to influence many students' lives for years to come.

This is a simple request: books for students. Your help will give motivated students from a moderate poverty level school a chance to read a book that will change how they look at the world.
