I teach students with varying disabilities that are mainstreamed in a general education math class. My students range from specific learning disabilities to autism.
My students with disabilities struggle with basic math facts, using the correct method to solve problems, reading comprehension, solving multi-step equations, etc.
Our school climate is of mixed cultures, abilities, and economic status. For some of them, school is their "safety home" and for others, it is an escape from their lives at home. Students having basic supplies and/or technology for school are not a necessity for them when they are struggling to get basic needs. Most of them do not have access to use the Internet at home nor a way to access it. Our school goes from one extreme to the next, with upper class to lower class. Our school environment is a family atmosphere and we look out for one another.
My Project
As a blended model classroom, we try to integrate technology daily into our lessons. Due to the lack of ability to have the use of computers daily, these laptops would be extremely helpful. The blended model includes group work, incorporating various strategies (visual, hands-on, technology), etc. To be able to incorporate this model in the classroom effectively, we need to have the use of laptops daily. Students will be able to have instruction via the Internet, daily assessments, and use online tools to help determine knowledge and find out where gaps are in their basic knowledge. The computers would allow students to work independently and at their own pace.
The use of the Internet will not only help students see where their own learning gaps are, but allow them to see where they have improved.
Using technology on a more frequent basis, we will be preparing our students for college instruction and improving their skills with computers. We are hoping by presenting math in a variety of ways, students will begin to engage and love math!
