Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

If there is one thing I learned in my first year in the classroom, it is that my students will rise to meet the high expectations I set for them. I teach 8th grade reading and language arts at an under-resourced middle school in a high-need community. Many of my students come to me reading 3-4 years below grade level and have little confidence in the education system or in themselves. It is my job to do everything in my power to make sure my students have the same opportunity to receive a solid education as their peers in more affluent communities.

While my students are eager to learn, they oftentimes miss out on important educational experiences because of lack of supplies, resources, and technology at my school. My motto is to "always do the best we can with what we have," but I know that my students are not having the same valuable classroom experiences as their peers. This is especially true in the area of computers and multimedia technology. Most students at my school get little or no exposure to modern technology and multimedia, and their educational and occupational futures will certainly suffer as a result.

A valuable piece of multimedia equipment that could transform the instructional experiences of my students is an LCD projector. Having an LCD projector in my classroom would allow me to give my students immediate access to important web-based articles, pictures, and video clips. It would also allow me to design and present more interactive and engaging lessons using PowerPoint technology and other multimedia software on my laptop computer. Over the course of this year, when I wanted to show my students a picture or a video clip on my computer, I would have to walk around the classroom with my laptop in hand, or have my students crowd around a desk in order to see. An LCD projector in my classroom would facilitate my lessons, expose my students to important multimedia and web-based information, and help to push my students closer to reaching their academic goals.

My students deserve the opportunity to receive a quality education. You can help to make a quality education a reality for my students by supporting this project. Your donation will help to make learning more fun, engaging, and relevant for my students. It will also enable me to utilize many more educational resources in order to give my students the best learning experience possible.
