Why Do We Need To Know This Math Skill?

My students need 5 iPod nanos to view real life situations in which they will develop math word problems or answer word problems about the video.

Why do we need to learn this math concept for? I am a 6th grade math teacher from Louisiana who would like to enhance students understanding of the relationship of real-life, everyday situations in which we encounter and how they are related to what they are learning. We are a high poverty school which are striving to motivate and enhance the lessons to make the more engaging in the classroom.

Students always ask when I am going to use this math for in my life. At the 6th grade level it is about improving basic skills in order for students to succeed in pre-algebra and algebra in the 7th and 8th grade. Student do not see the relevance in the math skills that they learn in school and how we use math everyday. I explain to them as much as possible but today's students are more visual learners than in the past. I would like to show students the relationship of everyday activities and the math concepts that they learn on an everyday basis.

I believe that the use of iPods would be beneficial because I would download real-life situations that relate to the topics we are discussing and have them discover the relationship. For example, we are discussing positive and negative numbers. I would download a video possibly from the Internet about balancing a checkbook. Students would be in cooperative learning groups with this video and an assignment. The assignment would have critical thinking questions that have them discover the relationship of the video to positive and negative numbers. The assignment would be to develop their own word problem as well as find the answer to word problems about the video.

You would make this a possibility for me to develop the relationship of real-life situations to math concepts that seem to my students not to be related. Students would benefit in a number of ways such as critical thinking skills, developing a true sense of the importance of math skills, and confidence in themselves for discovering these skills on their own.
