Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am starting my 4th year teaching Kindergarten at a Charter School in Southern California. We are a Title I school and reside in a low income area with a student population of 98% Hispanic nationality. Currently there are 1100 students that attend our school from Pre-K to 5th grade. To accommodate all these students we are on a 3 track year around schedule, 2 months on and 1 month off. The nice thing about this schedule is that the students have time in between the tracks to absorb and own the knowledge that was taught before the break.

Kindergarten is an interesting time in a young child's life. Some children are starting school for the first time while others attended pre-school. As a Kindergarten teacher I am constantly amazed by how much the students grow and learn in one year of school. During Kindergarten there are a lot of developmental changes that occur. One of the changes have to do with fine motor development. Students need to work on finger and hand strength that will allow them to write correctly. This is an important stage of development that can result in good or sloppy writing in the upper grades.

The solution is simple. Strengthen the finger and hands. We do so many things with our hands. One of the things that I like to use in the classroom is dough. I use dough many different times throughout the week. Rolling and squeezing dough increases hand strength. While rolling and squeezing dough students make letters, numbers and later in the year spell words. All of these things benefit the students physically as well as mentally.

Over the years I have supplied this dough for my classes out of my own money. With rising costs I can no longer afford to do so. With your help we can work together to make a difference in the lives of these students. By helping them increase their development you in turn give them a gift that will help them succeed throughout their academic career. You can make a difference. Thank you!
