Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We are a 4th grade classroom in a Mathematics, Science, & Technology Magnet school center located in a low income, hardworking, Hispanic neighborhood. The magnet center goal is to attract and serve a diverse community of students of all academic achievement levels.

Animals in a classroom are of great benefit when studying Life Sciences. The challenge comes not only in looking after them, but convincing others, usually other teachers and administrators, of their importance to students when learning about animal behavior and other scientific academic concepts. In the past students have become experts on one animal and presented their work to the school and parents on "Science Day." This year we would like to expand both our ability to document the work and our audience through podcasting. For that we need these ideal digital Flip cameras.

With cultural and academic diversity of students in mind, approaching the study of animals from the scientific, literary, and artistic point of view will open doors of learning for all students. The strengths of one group will enhance and strengthen the knowledge of others. The use of these simple to operate digital Flip cameras will open the door to documentation of observations for all of our students. They will then be able to use their videos to reach out to a larger real world audience via podcasting.

Today's world is much smaller and my students need to have an awareness of it. If they can learn to use today's technology with purpose of communicating information it will open many roads for them. Understanding comes with doing. We have animals in our classroom to really understand their needs and behavior. It encourages them to become the scientists and veterinarians of tomorrow. It is the same with technology; it is not enough to just see and hear about it, they need to put their skills to work and actually use the technology of today and perhaps become creators of the technology of tomorrow.
