Very young children are often overlooked as being capable of achieving the same musical aptitude as older children. Those familiar with the Suzuki method, however, have seen time and time again that this is a myth. As an elementary music teacher, I see a wide range of students from pre-K all the way through 8th grade, and as a violinist and Suzuki certified instructor, I know the benefit of starting students on an instrument at a young age when children are most receptive to repetition, language skills are still forming, and bodies are flexible and moldable.

Last year, I began a violin program for the 4th-7th grade students at my school. Through the course of the year, my preschool and kindergarten students learned about the violin and watched as their older siblings practiced their first songs, were finally able to take their violins home, and performed for the school. Many of my young students would like to learn to play the violin and I feel that they would benefit greatly at this stage in their development from the discipline, focus, and teamwork that playing an instrument teaches. In addition, the majority of my students are from minority backgrounds and will be the first generation to go onto higher education. Starting to play an instrument at such an early age would allow students the time to master their craft and prepare them for winning scholarships to high schools and colleges.

Unfortunately, we do not have small violins at my school. My preschool and kindergarten students will need 1/8 and 1/16 sized violins to fit their tiny frames. A classroom set of violins in this size would allow each class to utilize the instruments when they meet for their weekly music class.

Please make it possible for my preschool and kindergarten students to have the opportunity of a lifetime--an opportunity that is rare in a public school--of learning to play an instrument at a vital time in their development and making many more dreams possible for them in the future.
