Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

With reading, the possibilities are endless. As a 7th grade Reading/Language Arts teacher, I have experienced how reading can literally help save the lives of children-inner-city children in particular. As a school in an extremely high need area, I believe the students would value texts that they could relate to and that do not insult their potential or intelligence. The play "A Raisin in the Sun" will give our children the opportunity to see that their story is not unfamiliar and their struggles are not foreign.

Imagine this: growing up without quality reading materials, without materials that reflect you and your culture, without materials that can challenge you to strive for more. This is the situation I face daily in trying to inspire my children to read. In taking a straw poll, most of my children tend to not like to read because they feel the books offered do not reflect them and their experiences. With the aforementioned books, the characters are ones the children can relate to and admire.

By reading "A Raisin in the Sun", my students will be able to connect to some of the struggles the characters faced as well as witness their determination to persevere.

With your help, my students will become exposed to a world far beyond their current environment. They will be able to see that their current situation does not have to determine their destiny just like the main character Walter Lee Younger.
