This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach second grade in a Title One school that is ninety-three percent below the poverty level. For eight years I have watched these students come to school excited to learn even though their home situation is abysmal.
At the beginning of each school year I am challenged with the same dilemma of making sure that my students have basic school supplies. If I am fortunate, some students will bring a pencil to school only on the first day. The remainder of the year is spent scrounging for basic supplies.
If I can continually supply my students with basic supplies, then the students can focus on learning. Meeting the children's basic needs lessens their stress level and allows them to focus their attention on the important issues at school.
Ultimately these children are our future. Do we want them to focus on becoming educated leaders, or should they focus on the fact that the family is unable to provided basic school supplies?
