Calculating Success in Mathematics

My students need 20 fraction calculators that show division quotients with remainders, decimals, or fractions.

Motivate students and help give them a strong mathematical foundation. My fourth grade class in a small charter school is full of wonderful kids in a diverse, high need, urban neighborhood.

New math standards require fourth graders to have a strong understanding of the relationship between fractions and decimals. Many are still lacking a foundation in basic fact calculation. I currently have two basic calculators in my classroom, and the closest class set I can get my hands on is four blocks away at our middle school.

These fraction calculators have several essentials that will help my students: 1) they have a flashcard option so students can quiz themselves on their basic facts, 2) they show division quotients with either remainders, fractions, or decimals, and 3) they display fractions in the way that makes the most sense to students, with the numerator on top and the denominator on the bottom. Students will use calculators at individual and small group differentiated centers to check their work as well as for some whole class activities.

You will make it possible for my students to be more independent in their mathematics work and have a greater understanding of the relationship between fractions and decimals.
