We got us somthin’ to write about! Inner-city Pre-K Authors and Illustrators? Absolutely! We’re on the “Write” track to Bookmaking! 20 exuberant 4 and 5 year old students need technology to develop and encourage their author and illustrator skills. This will benefit classes for years to come. In only 5 years, this equipment can help 100 inner-city 4 & 5 year olds in an all day Pre-K setting. Developmentally, 4 year old students are ready to become story tellers and illustrators. Making picture books makes sense as project writing for young children for several reasons. Picture books are a familiar kind of writing and they expand avenues for meaning-making. Making picture books forces the issue of composition (not just list making), helps the children to read like writers, builds stamina for writing and it is fun and children like it. There is, however, a bit of frustration when trying to put the words on the page when they are first starting. To begin, each child will illustrate several pages of his book. Then the child will tell his story to a teacher. As they “read”, they will revise and add to their book. When the book is completed, the teacher will have the child share it with others as they are being recorded. These recordings will be kept with the book for future readings. This will be a great reminder to the children that they ARE writers and illustrators. It will also be a keepsake for the parents and the child. This will encourage the child to become a life-long writer.
