Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My class wants Elmo to help them learn. I teach first grade. I work with students that are learning English and are in a high-need community. We are a failing school, according to our test scores. Our kids are not failures, but are hard workers and need some modern technology to compete with students in more affluent areas.

My school does not have money for all the supplies that the teachers need. I have learned how to do Power Point Presentations. Since my students are learning English, they need many visuals to understand the vocabulary and comprehend the stories presented in our fast paced reading program. When they take the standardized tests in second grade and above, they will be expected to do as well as native English speakers who come from more affluent homes.

I need an Elmo to project pictures big enough for the whole class to see. Our reading program includes a lot of whole group instruction. If the class cannot see visually what I am trying to teach them, it will be difficult for them to learn. I would be able to show students how to do math and reading assignments by putting the book on the Elmo and having the pages projected for the whole class to see while I am explaining assignments.
