Ever heard of the saying, Everything I ever needed to know I learned in kindergarten? It's true! As a kindergarten teacher, I love introducing students to the big wide world in which they are a part. It is because my students come from such an economically at-risk neighborhood that they need exposure to many and varied life experiences and lessons not afforded to them at home.

Kindergartners are by their very nature egocentrically focused. They love nothing better than to talk about their lives and their families. I want to use this self-interest to teach responsibility, increase parent/family involvement and to motivate students as authors and readers.

With access to a digital camera and printing source, my students will be able to author and publish books about their lives as kindergartners. Together with their families, students will use technology to document their lives, resulting in the publishing of 'A day in the life'.. series of classroom books. They will use their new writing skills to tell the story of their lives thus far. Students will also learn about how others live by reading their fellow classmates stories, thus developing a sense of the world outside of themselves and nurturing curiosity.

You CAN make a difference in a child's life. You can be responsible for funding an experience they will hold on to for the rest of their lives. Imagine the look of pride and joy on a child's face as he sits down to 'read' his story to someone important in his life. This project demonstrates how much we value each individual and honor them for who they are, while motivating them to become readers and writers.
