Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are diverse, hard-working, inspirational young people who have a deep love for learning. I am a first grade teacher in a rural North Carolina school. The population in this area consists of lower economic families. Therefore, my school is a Title 1 school. We receive Title 1 money because the majority of our students qualify for free or reduced meals.

As I previously stated my students have a deep love of learning. Music especially creates an enthusiasm in my classroom that is truly unique. My students love to sing, listen and dance to all types of music. I use music as a mode of teaching important academic concepts because rhythm has been a proven way to increase retention of information. Music is a wonderful way to help students learn information. Not only can it be used across the curriculum, but it can be energizing, relaxing, thought provoking, and just plain fun.

I play records, cassettes, and cds in my classroom. All of these are wonderful ways to share music with my students. However, mp3 files are the new and more convenient way to listen to a vast collection of music. In my classroom my students have a limited collection of songs, but by having an mp3 player, along with the speakers, my students are able to have access to thousands of songs.

With your help in funding this project, the students in my school will understand how music helps them to learn in the classroom. More importantly my students will learn an even bigger lesson with your donation, and that is the kindness of others.
