Teaching Fraction Through the Civil War

My students need 60 book binding covers and 60 binding spines to create their Civil War cookbooks. My students need 2 cookie sheets, 2 cake pans, 2 loaf pans, 6 mixing bowls, 6 sets of dry and 6 sets of liquid measuring cups and spoons, 6 mixing spoons, 6 spatulas, and 6 sets of pot holders so they can prepare their recipes.

Fractions are fun! That is my mantra with all of my Jr. High classes. However they don't always believe me. Therefore, I try to come up with activities to teach fractions in exciting and real-life situations. My goal is to prove to the students that fractions are not as bad as they appear and that math is an important part of their everyday life! Every year I am faced with the challenge of changing the opinions of my students and help them develop the skills they need to perform the operations with fractions. My students often come to my classroom with a limited exposure and a great dislike for fractions. However, at the Jr. High level students are already expected to know how to use fractions and then apply them to algebra.

Every year, the Jr. High team gets together to complete an interdisciplinary study of a particular topic. This year, the team chose the Civil War. This posed a new challenge. How do I teach fractions through the Civil War? So, I decided to have the students research recipes from the Civil War period then convert the measurements to increase and decrease the recipes. Of course the ingredients in the recipe must use fractions! An additional challenge I faced was supplies. The school district recently put on an addition to the school, which included a kitchen. However, the kitchen is not stocked with kitchenware. Therefore, the kitchen has been sitting there without any teachers or students utilizing the addition.

In order for this project to be successful, kitchenware (cookie sheets, cake pans, loaf pans, mixing bowls, measuring cups, mixing spoons, spatulas, pot holders, and measuring spoons) and booking binding materials (spines and covers) are necessary. The students will be asked to research recipes from the Civil War period. They must list all ingredients, make a connection to the time period, show conversions to double the recipe (multiplication and addition of fractions) and to reduce the recipe (division and subtraction of fractions). All of the recipes will then be complied into a Civil War Cookbook. The students will also prepare their recipes to share at the Jr. High Civil War Day.

Your help will ensure that my students learn much more than just knowledge of the Civil War. They will also gain measurement skills, how to work in the kitchen safely, word processing skills, and those fractions are fun! My goal is to provide a life-long appreciation of math and your help will ensure that my students are given that opportunity!
