Ms. L. Jacksonville Commons Middle School
Jacksonville, NC Grades 6-8

A lack of pride in the past will result in a lack of commitment for future. Our school is a transient school with several students on free or reduced lunch. Many of the students are tempted to join gangs in favor of learning. I teach Eighth Grade Social Studies which focuses on North Carolina and U.S. history, a subject many students do not feel important. Some of the apathetic attitudes towards history stem from low ability reading levels as well as today’s society which focuses on instant gratification over long term commitment.

Our students face the challenge of improving reading and comprehension skills that will enable them to be successful in the classroom, the community, and future endeavors. They are working on becoming experts on comprehending and questioning what they read, determining the difference between fact and fiction as well as recognizing biases and propaganda. My goal is to instill internal vice external gratification in the students allowing learning to be the reward.

The variety of historical fiction books, The Fifth of March, Johnny Tremain, My Brother Sam is Dead, Sand Castle: Blockade Running and the Battle of Fort Fisher, and Night Riders of Harpers Ferry will encourage students to learn history in a research based atmosphere as they determine and differentiate the fictitious from the factual in American history expanding other skills as they proceed. In addition to learning and appreciating history, students will expand their vocabulary, increase reading and thinking skills by researching events, and become independent thinkers verifying authentic people and events while discarding myths and biases. Armed with facts, discussion will help students determine the author’s biases and determine the significance of propaganda and how it influences people’s decisions.

Your donation leading to the purchase of the 45 requested historical fiction books focusing on American history will empower tomorrow’s leaders to search for answers, question what they read and hear, and renew national pride in American heritage. In the process, you are improving the self-esteem of several students who have given up on themselves. Ultimately, you are ensuring that the corporate world has self-sufficient leaders for the future. Thank you for caring.
