My Weird School

My students need 1 copy of each book (22 total books) from the "My Weird School" series.

I am currently teaching third grade in a rural Title 1 school. Most of my students come from low-income homes and are not often exposed to a variety of novels. As third graders begin to enhance their reading skills and strategies, I would like to increase their excitement for reading by incorporating book talks into my classroom.

Due to the nature of their environment and home lives, many of my students have not been exposed to a variety of novels and the idea of book talks. The third grade curriculum focuses on strategies that good readers use. I believe these strategies can be reinforced through book talks. Students will interact with the text through projects and presentations. These book talks will push the students to ask questions while reading and think about the plot and characters on a higher level. Students will also develop public speaking skills by presenting character information to the class.

I plan on incorporating the "My Weird School" series into guided reading and book talks. Each child will choose one book from the series that focuses on one particular character. While students will read independently, they will have the opportunity to discuss the book with me one on one. After reading the book, the students will create a project to represent the book and characters in the story. The students will need to explore character traits and make connections with other characters and novels. In addition to academic benefits, the students will also benefit socially, as they discuss the series and books to their peers. With every child reading one book of the series, a common interest will develop and bond the class together.

As a donor, you would be helping these students in numerous ways. I truly believe that by incorporating book talks into my classroom I will see improvements in the reading skills and interest levels of the students. I also believe the class dynamics will benefit as the students begin to bond with their peers through the common interest of the book series. I need your help to spark an interest in these students and show them how fun reading can be!
